The Importance of Advanced Motor Fuels
Policies and regulations that promote research, development, and the adoption of advanced motor fuels are essential for a clean, sustainable, and affordable transport system. Transport subsectors may pursue different powertrain and fuel technologies to benefit from improved and emerging technologies and advanced motor fuels to achieve these goals.
Advanced motor fuels are crucial for reducing the transport sector's environmental impacts and for meeting rising global transport demand. Advanced motor fuels can supplement conventional fuels without major modifications to engines and offer practical solutions that can be implemented immediately and provide significant environmental benefits. By combining advanced motor fuels with advanced combustion engines, emission mitigation systems, and appropriate infrastructure and policies, we can drive towards a cleaner, more sustainable, and affordable transport future.
Advanced motor fuels can also improve energy security, create economic opportunities, and lead to a healthier planet for future generations. They represent an important step forward towards a world where mobility, sustainability, affordability and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
The global transport sector is at a critical juncture. With growing concerns over climate change, air pollution, and energy security, there is an urgent need for clean, affordable, sustainable mobility solutions. Heavy-duty road transport, mobile machines, shipping, and aviation are subsectors that face challenges that cannot currently be fully met with electrification. Advanced motor fuels can play a role in these subsectors, now and into the future, offering pathways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improve air quality, and enhance energy efficiency across all modes of transport.
Conventional fuels dominate the transport sector. Although electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction in road transport and mobile machinery, especially in light-duty applications, the limitations of battery technology - such as energy density, charging times, capital costs and cost of ownership - make them less practical at present for shipping and aviation. In these subsectors, liquid fuels are likely to remain indispensable for the foreseeable future.
Advanced motor fuels offer a bridge to a sustainable future by providing fuel solutions that integrate into existing infrastructure and engine technologies with few, if any, major modifications. Advanced motor fuels significantly reduce emissions and can be produced renewably, reducing dependence on conventional fuels.
